１０年サンタ
数年間関わってきた少年サッカークラブが１０周年を迎えました。
記念のカップ戦や１０年間に渡る子供達の成長の様子を収録したＣＤ製作などが有志保護者やコーチ達の手で進められています。
僕は何もできないでいるから、記念行事のシングアウトの「指揮」だけはしっかりやろうと思いました。
でも指揮なんてやったこともない、ここはギターの柄で音頭とりをすることに。
他に伴奏は役員さんのピアノと有名なマリンバ奏者の方らしい。
開演１時間前、会場の体育館に足を踏み入れて驚きました。
この飾りつけは・・・。
それこそ入学式よりゴージャスなのではないかと思われるほど。
これまた、有志のお母さん方が汗して準備したものに違いありません。
記念ＣＤの予告編もプロ顔負けの手の込みよう。
キリン社のＣＭよろしく、日本代表とガキンチョサッカーがオーバーラップする構成。
スゴすぎる！
さて本番、これは半端では済まされまいと審判服に鉢巻というわけのわからん姿で登場。
すると、悪態ついていた中２連中が椅子の上に立ってスクラム。
「こらーっ！中１−っ！」
と勘違いした鬼コーチの怒号が飛ぶと、
「ほら中１、おまえらもやれ！」
と中２が催促。
「ピピーッ！お母さん方もスクラム組んで！」
僕は胸に仕込んでおいたイエローカードをここぞとばかり掲げました。
そして、揺れた。
体育館全体が揺れました。
墨田に戻り、どうしようもない状況の中、これだけが楽しみの昼食に。
行きつけのファミレスで料理を待っていると、例のお目当てのウェイトレスさん、彼女だけがユニホームの上に赤いエプロンと白いボンボリの赤いキャップを付けていました。
「あら、サンタさんがいるわ。」
と隣の女性客。
このサンタさん、浮いていない、凛として華やか。
配膳しに来た彼女は、
「これ、ほとんど罰ゲームですよねぇ・・・」
と照れて見せましたが、僕は本気で言いました。
「お子さんに見せてあげたいですね、絶対喜びますよ！」
１００年ほど前、ニューヨークの新聞に載った有名な社説があります。
途中まで訳してみましたが、語学力および体力至らず頓挫しました。

Dear Editor---
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.
Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth,
is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia, your little friends are wrong.
They have been affected by the scepticism of a sceptical age.
They do not believe except they see.
They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible
by their little minds. All minds, Virginia,
whether they be men's or children's, are little.
In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect,
an ant, in his intellect as compared with
the boundless world about him,
as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping
the whole of truth and knowledge.
ヴァージニア、君の幼い友人達は間違っています。
彼らは懐疑的な世代の懐疑主義から悪影響を受けています。
彼らは自分が目にしたものしか信じません。

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.
He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist,
and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.
そうです、ヴァージニア、サンタクロースはいます。
彼は間違いなく（この世に）愛と寛容と献身が存在するのと同じく存在します。
それらは君の人生に最高の美と喜びを与え満たしてくれるものですよね。
Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus!
It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias.
There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry,
no romance to make tolerable this existence.
We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight.
The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies.
You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve
to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down,
what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus,
but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus.
The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see.
Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not,
but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive
or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside,
but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man,
nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart.
Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain
and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond.
Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever.
A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now,
he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

追伸
新聞紙史上に残るこの社説を執筆したフランシス・Ｐ・チャーチ氏は、
その後間もなく結婚し、1906年4月にこの世を去りました。
子供はいなかったということです。
バージニア・オハンロン・ダグラス嬢は、その後大学の修士課程を経て教師となりました。
1971年5月13日、彼女が81歳の生涯に幕を閉じると、米国の各紙はこのニュースを大きくとり上げたようです。
「バージニアは本当にサンタクロースを探しに旅立ってしまった」、
そんな見出しで報じる新聞もあったそうです。
僕がこの話を初めて知ったのは、多分朝日新聞のコラムでした。
